Sue Lewington takes an artist’s journeys along the River Fal, the resulting exhibition called ‘From source to sea’ is at The National Trust’s Trelissick Gallery from 18 May to 9 June 2013.
Well known for her published sketchbooks of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Sue’s paintings, drawings and sketches are detailed with observations and insights. From the upper reaches of a small brook to the expanse of Carrick Roads with Falmouth and its Docks, Sue’s curiosity and artist’s eye delights in discoveries as she travels along the River’s course. Scenery, wildlife, history and forgotten corners are captured in watercolour and pen often accompanied with annotated notes.
“When I decided to follow the Fal from its source to the sea I had no idea how secretive the river is. I soon learned to love its little glimpses of sparkling water, tiny lanes, bridges and muddy patys through the tree-lined banks and marshy valleys until the sliver of light in the distance became the huge expanse of the estuary. Finally, I felt the river had become secret again disappearing in curving waves to the horizon.”
