With a new collection of oil paintings at Trelissick Gallery, Neil Davies shares his fascination for Cornwall’s far western Penwith Peninsula.

Neil’s paintings are richly coloured and textured, filled with energy and excitement. His inspiration is triggered by walking the landscape, visiting and revisiting to make initial instinctive drawings and sketches. His starting points for a painting can be myriad, an illuminating flash of light upon the sea, a transient storm. In his studio great energy is used in building up the paint surface, contrasting layers of thick impasto with transparent glazes, journeying colours across the painting surface pushing at the boundaries of the traditional elements of the paint to seek the unforeseen and exciting result.
